CDC: H1N1 activity shows further signs of decline
Influenza A (H1N1) activity in the United States appears to have declined even further, according to health officials at the CDC who spoke at a news conference today.
Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the Center of Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, said "widespread influenza activity" for influenza A (H1N1) is now being reported in four states: Delaware, Maine, New Jersey and Virginia. Two weeks ago, 11 states were still reporting "widespread influenza activity." Schuchat also noted that there has not been a strong emergence of seasonal influenza yet this season.
Schuchat stressed that although influenza A (H1N1) activity appears to have decreased, the virus is still circulating. She warned that Americans and health care providers should not become complacent in regards to influenza A (H1N1).
Schuchat added that influenza A (H1N1) vaccines are still available. She said that even though influenza A (H1N1) activity is decreasing, people should still get vaccinated. "We want more people to get the vaccine," she said. "There are 136 million doses available and we have an ample supply in most of the country. Most states have opened up the vaccine to anyone who wants it."
